How the estimate works

CIF (cost, insurance and freight) is the value of the car once it reaches Tema: the price, auction fees, transport, shipping and insurance. Ghana's customs charges are worked out from it.

Duty, levies and VAT are shown as a range, as a percentage of CIF. They are made up of import duty, which depends on the vehicle type and engine size, plus several levies, VAT, NHIL and the GETFund levy. Two things make the real figure differ:

  • Customs sets its own value. The Ghana Revenue Authority values each vehicle in its system (ICUMS) and charges duty on that value, which can be higher or lower than what you paid.
  • Age matters. Cars 10 years or older pay overage penalties on top. Some older or badly damaged cars cannot be imported at all; see Ghana's import rules.

Treat the result as a planning figure, not a quote. We give you a written estimate for the actual car before you commit, and the final duty is what customs assesses.
