How to avoid car import scams
Car buyers are a favourite target for fraudsters. These checks protect you, whoever you buy from, including us.
Warning signs
- A price far below every other offer, with pressure to pay today "before someone else does".
- Bank or MoMo details that change, or that arrive by WhatsApp or email instead of on an invoice. A common trick: a message that looks like your dealer's, saying "our account has changed".
- Payment to a personal account, or to a name different from the company.
- No phone number that answers, no office address, or a website or page set up only recently.
- Photos without a VIN or lot number, or a refusal to share them, so you can't check the car exists.
- Gift cards, crypto or money transfer to a third party as the only way to pay.
Safe habits
- Call to confirm before every payment, on a number you already know, not the one in the message asking for money.
- Pay only against an official invoice in the company's name, and keep the receipt.
- Ask for the VIN and auction lot number. You can see the listing on Copart or IAAI and run a history report.
- Ask for the bill of lading once the car is shipped. It shows the car, the vessel and the consignee.
- Visit or video-call before buying a car "in Ghana".
